Thorns and Roses is a fashion story showcasing the collaboration collection of nri, a contemporary fashion brand based in Yangon, and Swannie Dean, a Burmese queer fashion stylist.

We are heavily drawn to the neighborhood beauty salons as these spaces have offered us the very first memory of being exposed to the trans and queer communities. Our own journey towards self discovery and acceptance was thus ignited from there, so it is meaningful for us to revisit and create more memories in these spaces.

Our muse and pride of Myanmar, a Burmese international model, Beauty, was back in town and she became the face of the story.

We are so grateful to the beauty salon owners from the San Chaung neighborhood in Yangon. We got to blast music from the 1980s and partied a bit as we were shooting… a truly significant memory. A self-funded shoot of six people in scorching Yangon heat was not an ideal scenario, but after a long day of shooting, we were so proud of ourselves for pulling it off.

The next day, after posting some images on Instagram, the military Junta announced a mandatory military conscription law. The whole country went into panic mode, a massive exodus happened once again, and we swiftly left the country in a week. We are based in Bangkok now and the collection is yet to be released.
